If the way the Democrats botched the Iowa caucuses on Monday reminds you of the way the Obama regime completely bombed the rollout of the Obamacare website in 2013 after years of building it at a cost of nearly $900 million, you’re pretty shrewd.
Because we thought the same thing.
As you may have heard, Iowa Democrats, in conjunction with the national party, paid big bucks to a tech firm founded by veterans of Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 campaign to build a voting app that aimed to not only improve the efficiency of the caucus process, but also to speed up reporting of voting results.
As the Los Angeles Times reported:
In 2016, for the first time, precinct chairs used a smartphone app built by Microsoft to relay results to party headquarters, enabling faster reporting than communicating via telephone hotline. This year, with the state party promising to disclose more granular data than in the past, the job of coding the app went to a fledgling tech firm run by veterans of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
It turned out to be a crushing failure.
And how? So much so, in fact, that ballot results are still being tabulated as of this writing on Thursday; in 2016, using older technology, Iowa caucus results were 90-percent known by midnight the day of the vote.
That also means that no one knows yet who won the caucus, though according to early returns, it looks like it’s either going to be former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg of super-socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders. Former Vice President Joe Biden, the party’s preferred 2020 candidate, is going to finish in a “gut-punch” fourth place.
But beyond the Iowa caucus drama, it is worth pointing out that, once again, Democrats have proven how hopelessly inept they are.
The Iowa caucuses were nowhere near the scale of building a nearly $1 billion website (!!) to take orders for insurance plans. And Democrats still screwed it up.
Yet, they want Americans to believe that they can run really complex things like ‘government’ in general. Foreign policy. Healthcare. And anything else they can steal from the private sector.
A frustrated Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez on Thursday had seen enough (and, no doubt, had heard enough from a jeering public and a ticked off Democrat caucus). He demanded an Iowa ‘do-over,’ because nothing says “democracy” like holding vote after vote until you get the result you want.
“Enough is enough,” Perez said in a tweet. “In light of the problems that have emerged in the implementation of the delegate selection plan and in order to assure public confidence in the results, I am calling on the Iowa Democratic Party to immediately begin a recanvass.”
A recanvass itself is fraught with unknown pitfalls, as Big League Politics reported:
A recanvassing would stretch out the proceedings even longer, but it could reveal some discrepancies in the vote total. It would require caucus worksheets and reporting sheets to be audited by hand in order to ensure they were correct, at least theoretically.
For his part, Buttigieg isn’t waiting around for a recount or a recanvass or a re-anything. He’s declared victory and has moved on to the next primary, in New Hampshire — with a stopover at Donor Central to raise some more money.
“So we don’t know all the results, but we know by the time it’s all said and done, Iowa, you have shocked the nation,” he said on Monday night while addressing his supporters in Des Moines. “Because by all indications, we are going on to New Hampshire victorious.”
Here’s what Democrats also don’t know: How to run things.
If this caucus is any indication of the competency of the national party — and it is — then America’s far better off sticking with the Trump administration.
