“Cat Dad” Paul Gallant, a Seattle-based radio host who took to Twitter back in June to strongly criticize President Donald Trump’s demand that the riots in Seattle stop, came home one day to find that his apartment complex had been destroyed by rioters. This has caused him to reevaluate his beliefs about firearms.
Gallant – who co-hosts the show Danny and Gallant on ESPN – had previously replied to a tweet from Trump that criticized Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan. The mayor had compared the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) to the “Summer of Love,” a social phenomenon that occurred in the 1960s and resulted in people moving to San Francisco to become part of the era’s counterculture movement by wearing different clothes, listening to different music and having different attitudes towards politics.
“These Liberal Dems don’t have a clue,” wrote Trump. “The terrorists burn and pillage our cities, and they think it is just wonderful, even the death. Must end this Seattle takeover now!”
Gallant responded by criticizing the president’s supposed alarmism. “Walked through [CHAZ] last night out of curiosity and saw no burning, pillaging or deaths,” said Gallant.
“Chill dawg,” he added.

On Friday evening, July 24, a violent mob of Antifa and Black Lives Matter rioters swept through the southwestern portion of the Minor neighborhood in eastern Seattle. The main buildings that the rioters targeted were the King County Youth Services Center and the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center. Both buildings serve as juvenile detention centers, while the Family and Justice Center also acts as a juvenile court and houses a variety of related programs.

Unfortunately for Gallant, the rioters also targeted several nearby businesses and properties. They started a number of fires in the area and looted and ransacked several stores, including a building that has a Starbucks on the bottom floor – the building where Gallant lives. (Related: Violent Antifa rioters once again terrorize Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood as Mayor watches and does nothing.)
In a series of tweets, Gallant talked about what he felt when he came home to see what had been done to his apartment building and he shared videos and pictures of what the Starbucks underneath the apartment complex looked like. He also talked about how officers from the Seattle Police Department (SPD) were asking the building’s residents to momentarily stay away, as they were afraid that the Antifa and BLM rioters might have planted an explosive inside.
Starbucks chains all over Seattle have become favorite targets of the rioters because of the company’s support for the Seattle Police Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing funding for the SPD to procure better equipment as well as to finance additional training sessions.
I feel like I need to buy a firearm, because clearly this is going to keep happening. Enough is enough. It looks like a block party down the street from me. Really angry right now.

In the morning after the riots, Gallant observed that there was a large fire that was still burning several blocks from his building. It freaked him out so much that he took his pet cat and vacated his apartment for the rest of the day. It is unclear whether the fire was caused by the rioters.
In response to the attack on his apartment complex, Gallant also stated that he may need to exercise his Second Amendment rights and purchase a firearm “because clearly this is going to keep happening. Enough is enough.”
He mentioned that he was very angry about what was happening around him, and that the riot made the street where he lives look like a block party.
Despite this, Gallant states that he stands by his earlier response to Trump. In a series of tweets, he responded to the people calling him out for his earlier statements by claiming that, when the president tweeted about CHAZ, it “didn’t seem as bad as portrayed by those outside of it.” He claims to have walked around the illegally occupied neighborhood several times before the actual “burning and pillaging” and other criminal events that the self-proclaimed autonomous zone is known for occurred.
“Opinions should be able to adapt and evolve,” Gallant later said, after people continued to call him out for supposedly being a hypocrite.
